It is our mission to assure that Rockland County adult learners acquire the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to become productive workers, effective parents and contributing members of their communities.
Rockland BOCES Adult Education Student Honored by NYACCE
Adult Education student Job Ucelo of Spring Valley has been recognized by the New York Association for Continuing Community Education (NYACCE) with an Honorable Mention as a Student of the Year. NYACCE is a professional organization which promotes continuing and community education in New York State.
Mr. Ucelo accepted the award at the organization’s dinner in Albany on March 4th.
Mr. Ucelo was unable to complete his high studies in his native country of Guatemala for financial reasons and shortly after arriving in the United States in December of 2006, he enrolled in a Rockland BOCES ESL class. In less than two years, Mr. Ucelei has advanced to the highest level of ESL class, enabling him to enroll in a “collaborative class” offered by BOCES and Rockland Community College.
The confidence Mr. Ucelo gained in the ESL classes bolstered him to register for and enroll in one of BOCES Pre-GED classes, so that he can earn his high school diploma. He hopes to continue on to college and pursue a degree in education.
Currently, Mr. Ucelo is juggling school, a fulltime job with a heating and air conditioning company, as much overtime as is offered to him, and a strong involvement in his church and its choir.
Triumph for Thirty-Seven Determined Adult Graduates
Absolutely determined to complete their high school education, thirty-seven of the most tenacious adults you will ever meet rejoiced at a ceremony marking the completion of their diploma requirements. They all received their GED diplomas at BERC following study at Rockland BOCES.
Student speaker Ulises Arroyo spoke to the audiences about the challenges he faced on his way to earning a GED. He said that the support he received from the BOCES staff combined with the support he got from his family, enabled him to stay focused on his goal of earning a diploma. Mr. Arroyo said now that he has his GED, he feels better prepared to take care of his family.
Adult Education Supervisor Albert Moschetti reminded the graduates that a GED is “most lucrative when it’s a gateway to higher education, whether it be at a trade school, a BOCES CareerTrack program , a community college, or a university.
