Ossining Literacy Zone
(OSSINING, NY) -- Participants in the Ossining Literacy Zone adult education program received certificates of completion after attending eight classes in the Eat Smart New York! nutrition workshop held at Park Early Childhood Center.
The adult students learned about smart shopping, healthy foods and snacks, preparing easy, nutritious and low cost recipes, and “Eating Smart”, taught in collaboration with the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Westchester County.
A three-year grant of $199,962 per year enables the Ossining Union Free School District to provide a wide range of literacy services for all Ossining residents through the Literacy Zone, which is based at Park School. The Literacy Zone includes a Family Welcome Center, where people can obtain referrals to collaborating agencies, businesses, financial institutions and health care centers. Adult basic literacy, ESL, GED and citizenship courses are offered, as well as programs/workshops to support health, financial and workplace literacy. A family literacy program also supports parents’ engagement in the school system and their involvement in their children’s education through interactive, intergenerational events and parent education activities.
The Ossining Union Free School District, nationally recognized for its mission to further the success of all children, serves approximately 4,550 pupils in six schools: Park Early Childhood Center for PreKindergarten and Kindergarten, Brookside School for Grades 1 and 2, Claremont School for Grades 3 and 4, Roosevelt School for Grade 5, Anne M. Dorner Middle School for Grades 6 though 8, and Ossining High School for Grades 9 through 12.
