Ulster BOCES Announces Grand Opening of the Midtown Kingston Literacy Zone
Ulster BOCES and its Community Partnerships announce the Grand Opening of the Midtown Kingston Literacy Zone Welcome Center at the Everette Hodge Community Center, 15 Franklin Street, Kingston, on Thursday, November 3, 2011.
Ulster BOCES and its Community Partnerships (a network of local community service agencies) have been awarded a Literacy Zone grant from New York State to provide educational experiences and community resources to students in our midtown Kingston area. The purpose of a Literacy Zone is to assist adults in accessing pathways out of poverty, to improve basic education (health literacy, financial literacy, family literacy, civics literacy, and lifelong learning), and to strengthen family support for children's education.
"The Literacy Zone opportunities will enable Ulster County residents to advance their education, create career and personal goals, and then achieve those goals in a more effective manner," explains Elizabeth Hayter, assistant director of Adult Education at the Ulster Adult Career Education Center. "Our career counselors will help students give voice to those goals, as well as provide information regarding community resources and assistance for their non-educational needs."
Ulster BOCES services will be provided through the traditional classroom setting (for GED preparation classes and ESL classes) and through activities and workshops at our Welcome Centers at the Everette Hodge Community Center, at Ulster BOCES in Lake Katrine, and Ulster Works.
