Literacy Zone and CTE Combine Forces

The adult and secondary education programs of the Yonkers Public Schools came together last month as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the connection between our school, the services we offer and the workplace. Representatives from the Literacy Zone Partnership and the CTE (Career and Technical Education) Program met at the Hudson River Museum on December 21st to discuss the ongoing development of programs that merge the expertise of both groups.

Pierorazio, Pathways to Success Director Dr. Joan O’Gorman and VIVE School Principal Susan Naber. Former Pathways to Success student, and newly designated “VIVE Ambassador” Chantee Martin, also spoke and described how continuing adult education, and her faith in God, assisted her on her journey from homelessness and domestic violence to gainful employment with GoodWill Industries located here at VIVE. Not to be outdone, Career and Technical Education was represented by Envirobotics, a team of engineering students from Riverside High School. Several members of the team spoke to the audience, relating their experiences with engineering and robotics. As a fitting finale to the program, Team Envirobotics demonstrated the robot they had created for the FIRST Competition last March.  The not-for-profit organization FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) inspires youth to pursue careers in science/technology.
